Oxiana Family Counselling

Security, understanding and change

Professional, respectful and structured counselling support for individuals, couples, parents and families.

Oxiana Family Counselling Services

Relationships and family life change over time. There are periods when communication becomes harder, the same conflicts keep returning, trust is affected, or it simply becomes difficult to understand each other's needs.

Oxiana Family Counselling offers professional, respectful and structured counselling support for individuals, couples, parents and families. The aim is to help you build greater security and understanding, improve communication, manage conflict and find practical paths towards positive and lasting change in everyday life.

The sessions are not about deciding who is right and who is wrong. Instead, we work to understand what is happening, why it is happening, which needs are involved and what concretely needs to change.

The approach is adapted to each individual, couple and family, and builds on extensive experience of working with people and families together with established knowledge of relationships, communication and conflict management.

Sessions draw on active listening, communication exercises, conflict management and practical relationship tools. The work may also be informed by principles from the Gottman Method as well as relevant CBT-inspired tools and psychodynamic perspectives, in order to better understand thoughts, feelings, behavioural patterns, earlier experiences and how these may affect the relationship today.

There is no single method that fits everyone. Every individual, relationship and family has its own history, its own strengths and its own challenges.

What can you get support with?

Six areas in which Oxiana Family Counselling offers structured and practical support.

Family counselling

Support for families in different life situations.

We work with relationships within the family, recurring conflicts, changing family roles, communication, trust and other questions that affect everyday family life.

Couple counselling

For couples who want to understand each other better, improve communication, manage recurring conflicts and strengthen their relationship.

Sessions may also address trust, jealousy, infidelity, closeness, boundaries, responsibilities, finances, family roles or major life changes.

The goal is not always for a couple to think alike. The goal is to understand differences, express needs and handle conflict in a more respectful and constructive way.

Individual counselling support

You do not need to come together with your partner or family.

Individual sessions can create space to understand your own situation, your feelings, needs, boundaries and relationship patterns – and to consider which changes are within your own influence.

Parenting support

Guidance towards a more secure and sustainable parenting role.

Sessions may cover boundaries, communication, conflict, adolescence, social media, the relationship between children and parents, and how parents can cooperate even when they see things differently.

The aim is to strengthen the parenting role while keeping the child's security, development and relationship with their parents at the centre.

Conflict management

Conflict is a natural part of close relationships. The problem is usually not that conflict exists, but how it is handled.

We work on identifying recurring conflict patterns, reducing destructive communication, expressing needs more clearly, listening better, setting respectful boundaries and gradually rebuilding trust.

Communication coaching

For you – or the two of you – who want to become better at talking, listening and understanding each other.

The focus includes active listening, clear communication, expressing feelings and needs without blame, and understanding what the other person is actually trying to say.

Support during separation and divorce

A separation is not only a legal decision. It can affect the relationship, identity, finances, the children, housing and the contact between two people for a long time.

Support can therefore be offered at different stages:

1

Before the separation

When you are considering whether the relationship can change or whether separation is the right way forward. The focus is on understanding the situation, exploring the alternatives and avoiding rushed decisions.

2

During the separation

Support in handling communication, conflict, emotions and practical changes with as much respect and stability as possible, particularly when children are involved.

3

After the separation

Support in establishing new boundaries, handling remaining conflicts and, where there are shared children, developing workable communication and sustainable cooperation as parents.

The purpose is not to decide whether someone should stay in or leave a relationship. The purpose is to help the individual or couple understand their situation and make thoughtful decisions, with consideration for both the adults and the children involved.

The family between two cultures

Migration can change far more than which country a family lives in.

After moving to a new society, the roles between partners may shift. Children often learn the language and social norms faster than their parents. Views on parenting, equality, finances, independence, relationships and young people's freedom may differ from what the family was used to before.

This does not mean that one culture is right and the other wrong. But sometimes the way a family communicates and lives together needs to develop alongside the new reality.

In the sessions we can therefore work on how the couple and the family can find a balance where both adults feel respected and involved, while the children experience security at home and the possibility of belonging in the society where they are growing up.

The goal is not for the family to leave its culture or identity behind. The goal is to find workable ways of combining important values, experiences and family bonds with life in the new society.

Every family deserves love and respect – and the opportunity to grow and find new ways forward.

Our approach

Oxiana works in a structured and practical way, using knowledge and tools drawn from research and established perspectives on relationships, communication and behavioural change.

One important source of inspiration is the Gottman Method, whose relationship research and practical tools address areas such as friendship and closeness in the relationship, communication, conflict management, trust and understanding between partners.

Where relevant, CBT-inspired tools are also used to highlight the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviour, along with psychodynamic perspectives that help reflect on how earlier experiences and recurring emotional patterns may influence relationships today.

These perspectives are used within counselling, guidance and conversational support.

The Gottman Method – relationship research in practice

Where it suits the situation, principles and practical tools inspired by the Gottman Method may be used to work with areas such as:

  • friendship and connection
  • everyday communication
  • understanding one's partner
  • managing conflict
  • trust between partners
  • emotional connection
  • strengthening the relationship over time

This does not mean that every client receives a formal Gottman Method programme. The tools are used as inspiration and support within the sessions.
